Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom Teeth Removal

At Laguna Pavilion Dental, we perform wisdom tooth extractions for patients who have impacted or otherwise problematic wisdom teeth with professional, friendly care for a smooth procedure.

Wisdom teeth are those third molars that erupt as we reach adulthood. For the majority of patients, wisdom teeth will cause problems and will need to be removed. For others, these third molars have plenty of room to develop and present no problems.

We provide wisdom tooth removal for patients who need to have these molars removed. In the past, wisdom teeth were necessary for proper chewing—but today, our jaws are smaller and wisdom teeth aren’t necessary.

Whether or not you’ll need to have your wisdom teeth removed all depends on your unique smile and oral health. When you come in for a consultation with Dr. Sattout at Laguna Pavilion Dental, we provide comprehensive exams, including x-rays, to determine the position and health of your wisdom teeth and whether or not they’ll require an extraction.

Signs You Could Need Wisdom Tooth Extraction

The most common reason that wisdom teeth need to be removed is because they are impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth don’t have enough room to push through the gums and into the oral cavity. As a result, they often get trapped in the jaw, which can result in pain, inflammation, and even infection.

For people who have had orthodontic work done, impacted wisdom teeth can actually push against the neighboring teeth, potentially causing teeth shifting and crowding. Being proactive about wisdom tooth removal and getting your teeth evaluated can help prevent any damage caused by impacted wisdom teeth.

Signs you could need your wisdom teeth removed include:

  • Wisdom teeth that have only partially erupted. For some patients, wisdom teeth will only partly come in through the gum tissue, making them impossible to properly clean, which can lead to tooth decay, inflamed gum tissue, and infection.
  • Pain or discomfort at the site. If you’re experiencing discomfort at the back of your mouth when brushing or eating, or are experiencing jaw pain, your wisdom teeth could be causing problems.
  • Your other teeth are shifting. If the teeth next to your wisdom teeth are sore, feel loose, or are otherwise shifting, it’s time to get x-rays with your dentist to determine the position of the wisdom teeth and to see if they need to be removed.

For some patients, their wisdom teeth will not present any symptoms, so it’s important to get an evaluation with your dentist to ensure their development is either on track or if it’s time to consider removal.
